Error
Description
Bearing an S/S West displacement with MMS-002 (Trumpet Tail) punch identification, this VarietyVista-documented 1948-S Jefferson Nickel from the San Francisco Mint shows the mintmark was initially placed slightly east before correction. Die markers UVC-364 / DMR-005: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with numerous die scratches running North-South on both reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The profusion of North-South die scratches across both faces at MDS indicates systematic polishing rather than incidental damage. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's design was struck at San Francisco during a period when mintmark punches were hand-applied at the Philadelphia Mint before working dies were shipped to branch facilities.
