Description

Second in the VarietyVista catalog of 1948-S Jefferson Nickel RPMs, documented under UVC-363 and DMR-004. Four die states chart the die's working life from initial use through advanced deterioration. Stage A presents both sides in early die state, when the repunched S mintmark is typically sharpest and most clearly defined. Stage B advances to MDS with developing die markers. Stage C progresses into LDS with additional surface deterioration and crack development. Stage D reaches VLDS, documenting the die at its most deteriorated condition before retirement. The four-state documentation provides collectors and researchers with a framework for placing individual specimens within the die's production timeline. The 1948-S Jefferson Nickel was struck at San Francisco during the post-war period, three years after wartime silver-alloy production ended and standard copper-nickel composition resumed.
