Description

Holding the lead catalog position for the 1948-S date, this VarietyVista-documented Jefferson Nickel shows an S/S South displacement using MMS-002 (Trumpet Tail), a punch variant with a flared terminal on the S's lower curve. Die markers UVC-362 / DMR-003 track three stages: Stage A with reverse at EDS and a strong die gouge above TY of LIBERTY — the primary diagnostic marker for attribution; Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with reverse and obverse at LDS, documenting the die's full service life from early through late state. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's design was struck at the San Francisco Mint with a mintage of 11,300,000 pieces in 1948.
