1947 (S) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

DDR-001, which Wexler numbers WDDR-001, is a doubled die reverse on the 1947-S Roosevelt dime. Both catalogs cite it as FS-801 in the Cherrypickers' Guide (Wexler writes FS-10-1947S-801 (013.5)). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a strong spread toward the center, best seen on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE and E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a CW spread pivoting at 11:00, best seen on DIME. On the obverse, above and left of the designer's initials, strong short scratches drop south from the bust; a strong scratch runs north to the bust from the 9 of the date, with short strong scratches running south from the bust above that 9; a strong NNE/SSW scratch lies inside the G of GOD; a scratch joins the G of GOD to the E of WE; and a strong scratch sits east of the D of GOD, above the U of TRUST. On the reverse a strong gouge sits above and right of the R of PLURIBUS, and many N/S scratches cross the mintmark. Joe Feld submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 1-R-II+V. VarietyVista, crediting Geoffrey Fults, sees a very strong spread on the outer lettering, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the stems and the outer leaves, plus a slight rotation on ONE DIME and the lower torch. Under its marker codes UVC-161 and DMR-004 it gives three stages. At stage A, an early-middle die state, a gouge sits above the upper right of the R of PLURIBUS, a scratch runs south from the I of PLURIBUS, and N-S scratches mark the left side of the obverse. At stage B, a middle die state, that scratch from the I is gone, light N-S scratches cover the reverse, and a new N-S scratch pattern appears on the obverse. At stage C, a late die state, the scratches on both sides have worn away.
