1947 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-023

Description

Among the higher-numbered entries in the 1947-S Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM catalog, WRPM-023 underscores the thoroughness with which the Wexler Team has examined this postwar San Francisco issue. Attributed under Wexler Variety ID 1947-S 1¢ WRPM-023, the variety documents a working die bearing overlapping S mint mark impressions created when the hand-held punch was applied more than once during die preparation. Twenty-three documented RPMs for the 1947-S places it among the more productive San Francisco issues for die variety research, though it remains overshadowed by the extraordinary RPM density found on certain Denver dates of the mid-to-late 1940s. The postwar economy of 1947 was marked by pent-up consumer demand unleashed after years of wartime rationing and savings bond campaigns, driving heavy transactional use of coins and necessitating robust production at all three mints. For die variety collectors, 1947-S cents in average circulated condition represent an affordable avenue for cherrypicking — purchasing coins at minimal cost and examining them under magnification for unattributed varieties. No cross-references beyond the Wexler system are currently published for this entry.
