1947-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-020
Error
Description
Submitted by Brian Ribar, the 1947-S Lincoln Wheat Cent WRPM-020 features a trumpet tail mintmark, a distinctive S mintmark shape where the lower terminal curves outward in a flared or trumpet-like fashion rather than ending in the usual tapered serif. Obverse die markers include a south-southwest to north-northeast die scratch beginning at the upper left side of the 1 in the date, a north-south die scratch through the B of LIBERTY, and north-northwest to south-southeast die scratches at the RTY of LIBERTY. Reverse markers include a north-northwest to south-southeast die scratch between the lower area of the B and last U of PLURIBUS. The trumpet tail S mintmark is the most immediately identifiable feature and serves as the quickest sorting criterion, as this distinctive mintmark shape can be spotted at moderate magnification before examining the finer die marker details across LIBERTY and PLURIBUS.
