1946 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

1946 WDDO-004 is a doubled die obverse on the 1946 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A strong counterclockwise (CCW) spread appears on the lower queue, the designer's initials, the date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse, LIBERTY carries several marks: a strong scratch heading west off the upper L, a short scratch heading west off the top of the E, two short gouges heading west off the lower R, and two short cracks heading west off the T, on its left. Two parallel scratches also head SW off the first T in TRUST from its lower left. On the reverse, cracks descend both of the eagle's wings, gouges lie between UNITED's lower D and the first S in STATES, and a crack links the US of PLURIBUS with the upper left wing. Jim Lafferty submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 5-O-II+VI. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
