Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1946 25¢ WDDO-001 and cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-I, this Washington Silver Quarter displays a Class I clockwise rotational spread visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the bottom of the ribbon, the designer's initials JF (John Flanagan), and the date — a comprehensive set of affected design elements distributed across both the inscription band and the portrait area of the obverse. The CW rotational spread indicates the secondary hub impression was pivoted clockwise relative to the primary, causing displacement that increases with distance from the rotation's center, which concentrates the most visible doubling on peripheral elements like the motto and LIBERTY. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running southwest from the underside of the nose and two short strong die scratches running southwest from the top left side of the queue (ponytail). Reverse markers are also documented: a die crack runs from the N in IN downward, providing additional diagnostic features for confirming the die pairing. The CONECA 2-O-I classification indicates this is the second cataloged obverse variety for the date under the Class I (Rotated Hub Doubling) mechanism. The Washington Silver Quarter was designed by John Flanagan and struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1946 — the first post-World War II year of production — in 90% silver composition weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter. The 1946 mintage marked the resumption of normal coinage operations after wartime demands had redirected mint capacity. The reverse die crack from the N in IN provides an independent confirmation point that works in conjunction with the obverse doubling pattern to verify this specific die marriage.
