Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 1946 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-016 on the Washington Silver Quarter shows light spread on the digits 46 of the date. The Washington Quarter, designed by John Flanagan after a Jean-Antoine Houdon bust of George Washington, was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. Die markers assigned by VarietyVista are UVC-604 and DMR-019, with three documented die states showing progressive deterioration: Stage A is Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B is Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State reveals a light die crack across the upper hair, a die crack across the bust, and a die crack running down the eagle's right wing on the reverse. The progressive die cracking in Stage C provides additional authentication markers for late-state specimens. The 1946 Philadelphia issue had a mintage of 53,436,000 pieces, resuming full peacetime silver quarter production after the wartime years. Collectors seeking this variety should focus magnification on the last two digits of the date where the hub doubling spread is concentrated, while the die crack progression through Washington's hair and bust in later die states offers secondary confirmation of the correct die pair attribution.
