1946 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-012
Error
Description
Light hub doubling spreads across IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the ribbon end, and RTY of LIBERTY on this 1946 Philadelphia Washington quarter, cataloged as DDO-012 (UVC-0600, DMR-013). Three die stages are recorded. Stage A is early die state and remains unconfirmed. Stage B brings several developments at mid-die-state: a die crack across the upper hair, a die crack across the bust, a V-shaped die gouge between the upper I and B of LIBERTY, and numerous short die gouges on the upper reverse. Stage C reaches late die state but is unconfirmed. The 1946 Washington quarter inaugurated the first full post-war year of production, and doubled dies from this transitional period hold interest for collectors tracking the Mint's resumption of normal operations. The V-shaped gouge between IB of LIBERTY is a particularly useful field diagnostic because its unusual geometry is immediately recognizable under a loupe. Examine IN GOD WE TRUST and the date for light extra thickness first, then look for the V-gouge and upper hair crack to confirm the specific die.
