Description

The first post-World War II Washington Quarter struck in 90% silver, the 1946 issue marks the return to peacetime coinage production, and DDO-007 represents one of the doubled die obverse varieties documented for this date. Attributed by VarietyVista under die classification UVC-0595 with marker reference DMR-008, the doubling manifests as a medium spread on WE and the last T of TRUST. The die progressed through three stages: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B in mid die state is also unconfirmed, and Stage C in late die state shows two straggly die scratches extending from the back of the head, with the reverse also in late die state. John Flanagan's Washington portrait continued unchanged through the silver era of the quarter series, and the medium spread on the motto provides a clear diagnostic for attribution. Collectors examining 1946 quarters for this variety should focus on the WE TRUST area under magnification, and those finding specimens with the Stage C die scratches behind the head can confirm advanced die state.
