1945 (D) Washington Quarter - Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Carrying the primary RPM designation for the 1945 Denver Washington quarter, this variety is cataloged by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-0565 and die marriage record DMR-018. The repunching shows as a D/D with the secondary impression displaced to the south. Three die stages have been documented for this die pair, though the first two remain unconfirmed. Stage A in early die state and Stage B in mid-die state both await additional specimen confirmation. Stage C in late die state reveals a die crack across the bust extending southwest into the 1 of the date, while the reverse has also reached late die state. The silver Washington quarters of the 1940s were produced in large quantities across all three mints, and RPM-001 holds significance as the top-designated repunched mintmark for this date and mint combination. VarietyVista notes that specimens are needed for new high-magnification color digital photography. The die crack into the date in Stage C provides a strong secondary diagnostic for confirming this die pair.
