1945-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
Error
Description
One of the strongest Washington Quarter doubled dies of the 1940s, the 1945-D WDDO-002 exhibits extremely strong Class VI extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the lower queue of hair, the designer's initials, and the date. Class VI extra thickness results from slight design differences between successive hub impressions, producing broadened design elements rather than discrete secondary images. Obverse die markers include a die crack through the hair at the top of the head and a strong die crack running across the base of the bust. The reverse displays a die crack through the upper RIBUS of PLURIBUS extending to the upper left wing, with additional die cracks descending through both of the eagle's wings. Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA 4-O-VI, this Denver Mint quarter's extensive network of obverse and reverse die cracks suggests the die pair saw heavy use, making late die state specimens particularly dramatic with their combination of bold doubling and advanced die deterioration.
