1945 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1945-D WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1945-D Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A counterclockwise (CCW) spread pivoting from about 8:00 appears on the date, the designer's initials, the lower queue and LIBERTY. On the obverse, a very strong scratch heads ESE off the 9 in the date, from its lower right, to the rim under the 4. Through the hair under the RT of LIBERTY runs a NW/SE crack with small die chips, and another crack crosses the bust's base. On the reverse, a thin, curving scratch links the lower part of the A in STATES with the second T. Ralph Huntzinger submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
