1943 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-005

Description

The 1943 DDO-005, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002, is a doubled die obverse on the 1943 Washington quarter, tracked by VarietyVista under its marker codes UVC-0291 and DMR-006 and listed by both catalogs as Cherrypickers FS-101 (Wexler: FS-25-1943-101 (016.5)). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a strong counterclockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the lower queue, and the hair detail at the lower back of the head. On the obverse a scratch heads NW from the lower left of the R of LIBERTY, two short gouges head west from the middle of the left side of the B in LIBERTY, and a crack crosses the bottom of the bust; nothing is noted on the reverse. L&C Coins submitted it, and CONECA lists it as 5-O-V. VarietyVista, crediting Glenn Jeong, describes strong spread on GOD WE and the RUST of TRUST. An early stage A is unconfirmed and stage B has both sides in a middle state. Stage C, late, shows a crack across the bottom of the bust, a crack through the forehead and upper hair, and a crack down the eagle's right wing.
