Description

Cataloged as UVC-0339 and DMR-015, this doubled die reverse on a 1943-D Washington Quarter displays light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B in mid die state shows a die gouge connecting the upper AR of DOLLAR along with a die scratch running east from the middle bar of E to the middle bar of R in LIBERTY, and Stage C in late die state is unconfirmed. The 1943-D Washington Quarter was struck during World War II in the standard 90% silver composition that would continue through 1964, making it both a silver coin and a wartime issue. The light spread on the reverse legend is characteristic of minor doubled die reverses where the secondary hubbing impression was only slightly displaced from the primary, requiring careful examination to detect.
