Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-011 with die marker references UVC-129 and DMR-014, this 1943-D wartime silver alloy Jefferson nickel displays a D/D repunching displaced to the west. The large mintmark above Monticello, introduced in 1942 to accommodate the wartime silver composition, makes repunching easier to detect on these issues than on pre-war nickels. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A remains unconfirmed at early die state. Stage B shows the reverse at mid die state, with a die crack running from the top of the forehead southward to the cheekbone behind the eye. Stage C at late die state is also unconfirmed. The forehead-to-cheekbone crack in Stage B provides the strongest diagnostic for confirming die state beyond the primary mintmark repunching. Specimens showing the D/D westward displacement are sought by collectors assembling sets of wartime nickel mintmark varieties, as the 1943-D issue saw heavy production to meet wartime demand for circulating coinage.
