1943-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Struck at Denver during the wartime silver alloy period, the 1943-D Jefferson Nickel WDDO-001 is composed of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, identifiable by the large D mintmark above Monticello on the reverse. This Class II plus Class VI doubled die — combining Distorted and Distended Hub Doubling — produces a spread toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the obverse star, the date, Jefferson's queue, and fine hair details at the back of his head, with close tripling on certain elements. Four die markers anchor attribution: on the obverse, a U-shaped die gouge in the field above the brow south of the S in TRUST; a curling die gouge between the top of Jefferson's head and the rim at approximately 12 o'clock; and a short die scratch northwest from the tip of his nose. On the reverse, a die scratch runs northeast from the top of the second L in MONTICELLO toward the building. Collectors should examine the date digits and IN GOD WE TRUST under magnification, looking for the characteristic spread that distinguishes hub doubling from the shelf-like image of machine doubling damage.
