1943-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-013

Description

Tracked by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-131 and DMR-016, the 1943-D RPM-013 is a repunched mintmark variety on a 1943-D Jefferson Nickel from the Wartime Silver Alloy period. Three die stages are cataloged: Stage A at early die state (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed) — all three awaiting photographic confirmation of their stage-specific characteristics. This variety shares the same date, mint, and series context as the RPM-010 from the same die pool but represents a separate working die with its own unique UVC identifier (131 versus 128), demonstrating how the Denver Mint's multiple working dies in 1943 each developed their own individual mintmark anomalies. The 1943-D Jefferson Nickel belongs to the Wartime Silver Alloy subseries, struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at the Denver Mint, weighing 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The wartime composition produced coins with a notably different color and surface quality compared to standard copper-nickel issues, and the silver content means wartime nickels have intrinsic precious metal value. Felix Schlag's original design features Jefferson's portrait on the obverse and Monticello on the reverse, with the oversized D mintmark positioned above the dome rather than in the standard location to the right of the building. The large-format mintmark provides excellent visibility for examining repunching evidence, as the expanded D letter shows displacement between successive punch impressions more clearly than the smaller mintmarks used in standard non-wartime production.
