1943-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-009

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with the comment D/D West, the 1943-D Jefferson Nickel RPM-009 is a repunched mintmark variety on the Wartime Silver Alloy issue from the Denver Mint, cataloged as UVC-127 with die marker record DMR-012. The D/D West designation indicates the initial D mintmark was placed too far east, with the corrective second punch shifting the final D westward, leaving a remnant of the first impression visible to the east of the primary letter. Die stage progression documents three states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with both reverse and obverse at mid-die-state (MDS), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed), with Stage B being confirmed. The 1943-D wartime Jefferson Nickel was struck during the height of World War II in the emergency composition of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. The Denver Mint’s 1943 wartime nickel production was substantial, as the facility operated at peak capacity to meet both military and civilian coinage needs. Felix Schlag’s design of Jefferson’s portrait and Monticello appears on each 5.00-gram, 21.2 mm diameter coin, with the large D positioned above Monticello to distinguish wartime-alloy coins. The westward correction pattern on this RPM matches the same directional shift documented on several other 1943-D and subsequent date wartime nickel RPMs, suggesting a systematic tendency at the Denver Mint for initial D mintmark placement to drift eastward of the intended position above Monticello. At the confirmed MDS, the die surfaces show moderate wear and the secondary D impression should be visible under magnification, though EDS specimens would potentially reveal the repunching with greater clarity.
