1943-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged as UVC-119 and DMR-004, the 1943-D Jefferson Nickel RPM-003 exhibits a D/D/D triple-punched mintmark with displacement to the east and west. Struck in the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese — a composition adopted to conserve nickel for military applications — this variety progresses through at least three documented die states. Stage A presents both reverse and obverse in early die state condition. By Stage B, the reverse reaches mid-die state while a light die crack develops in the hair area, accompanied by another crack running down the cheek behind the eye. Stage C reveals advancing deterioration with a light die crack from the lower right building extending to the rim, a crack from the head to the rim at approximately 12:00, and a crack traversing across the bust to the rim near 6:00.
