1943-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1943-D Denver Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel features multiple die cracks that began early in the die's life and expanded through progressive stages. Die markers UVC-118 / DMR-003: Stage A with die scratches on upper reverse at EMDS, a die crack through upper hair to rim at K-12 at MDS, and a die crack southeast through hair; Stage B with a light die crack from the last U of PLURIBUS to the mintmark at MDS and a light die crack from ear across face through nose to E of WE at LMDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The ear-through-nose-to-WE crack traverses the entire Jefferson portrait, documenting a single fracture line spanning the obverse face. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized D above Monticello identifies this Denver wartime issue, produced under heightened demand during the Second World War.
