The 1942 (S) Jefferson Nickel - Wartime Silver Alloy is a nickel from the San Francisco Mint, belonging to the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 32,900,000 wartime silver-alloy nickels dated 1942. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. The wartime silver alloy was introduced in the last months of 1942. Large mintmark above Monticello distinguishes silver from standard issues. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage.
