1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Bearing an S/S West displacement, this VarietyVista-documented 1942-S wartime silver Jefferson Nickel from the San Francisco Mint features an extensive network of die cracks spanning Monticello's dome, building inscriptions, and the obverse hair detail. Die markers UVC-045 / DMR-004 track three stages: Stage A with reverse and obverse at EMDS; Stage B with die crack north from dome to rim through mintmark and left leg of the 2nd U of PLURIBUS at MDS, die crack connecting upper CENT of CENTS, die crack connecting E of FIVE with C of CENTS, and light die crack northwest through upper hair at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The interconnected crack network at Stage B documents widespread structural fatigue. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized S above Monticello was part of the large-mintmark convention for wartime silver.
