1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-008
Error
Description
The 1942-S Jefferson Nickel Wartime Silver Alloy RPM-008 is cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-050 and DMR-009. The mintmark displacement is S/S East, with the initial S punch placed to the west and the accepted mintmark repositioned eastward, leaving a secondary westward impression visible to the left of the primary mintmark. Stage B die markers include a die crack running across the upper hair of Liberty's portrait and a second die crack across the bust — both obverse die cracks that indicate mid-to-late die state and assist in placing individual coins within the die-stage sequence. The 1942-S Wartime Jefferson Nickel is struck in a 35% silver alloy, with the large S mintmark placed above Monticello on the reverse — the standard placement for all 1942–1945 wartime silver alloy Jefferson Nickels regardless of mint. The San Francisco Mint struck substantial quantities of wartime nickels throughout this period. East-direction repunches on the large oversize S mintmark are detectable under moderate magnification, and the Stage B die cracks across the hair and bust provide secondary confirmation of die-state placement.
