1942-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-014

Description

Fourteenth in the deep 1942-D Mercury Dime RPM catalog, RPM-014 records another D/D repunching displaced southeast. This direction — below and to the right — appears on multiple 1942-D entries, and differentiating them requires close study of die-specific markers unique to each working die. Fourteen varieties deep, the 1942-D stands alongside 1943-D as a cornerstone of Mercury Dime RPM collecting. Southeast displacement positions the ghost D below and right of the primary, in an area relatively uncluttered by other design elements, potentially making the secondary impression easier to detect than on varieties where the ghost overlaps adjacent features. Denver's wartime production consumed dies at a pace guaranteeing a rich harvest of mintmark varieties, and the hand-punching step remained the artisanal bottleneck in an otherwise mechanized process. Weinman's reverse, with its central fasces and olive branch, frames the small mintmark area. This 90% silver dime, 17.9mm in diameter, was part of massive wartime output. Inspect the lower-right area of the D for the southeast secondary impression.
