1942 (D) Mercury Dime - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

1942-D WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1942-D Mercury dime, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-001. Both give the CONECA number 1-O-III and the Cherrypickers number FS-101; Wexler writes the latter as FS-10-1942D-101 with 010.8, and VarietyVista as FS-101/502. Wexler records the date as a 1942 hubbed over a 1941. Doubling shows on the 1, 9 and 4, strongest on the 4, and the second 1 is faint, sitting slightly inside and below the 2. IN GOD WE TRUST is spread to the east, and LIBERTY shows a close counterclockwise spread, heaviest on the LI. A short gouge runs east from the lower right of the 9. The reverse carries a repunched mint mark that Wexler lists as WRPM-004, a D/D Southwest. Frank Doty, Jr. submitted the coin, and Wexler adds Breen #3678. VarietyVista describes a medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and on the date, which shows as 42/41. It notes that the reverse is listed as its RPM-004, and tracks the die under its marker codes UVC-155 and DMR-002.
