Among the most dramatic repunched mintmarks documented for wartime Mercury dime production, the 1942-D RPM-001 displays a triple-punched mintmark — D/D/D — with displacements to the southwest and west, documenting at least three distinct applications of the D mintmark punch to this working die. Adolph A. Weinman's Winged Liberty Head dime, in continuous production since 1916, positions the mintmark on the reverse between the olive branch and fasces, where the small but precisely formed D letterform reveals multiple overlapping impressions when the punch was applied more than once in slightly different positions. Denver struck approximately 60.74 million dimes in 1942, a wartime production surge driven by the economic expansion of mobilization, and the volume of dies required meant each was individually hand-punched with the D mintmark — a manual process where alignment relied on the die worker's eye and hand steadiness alone. The triple-punch configuration with southwest and west displacement directions indicates the mintmark punch was repositioned at least twice after the initial impression: once to the southwest and once to the west, leaving three overlapping D outlines visible under magnification.
