1942-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

Showing a D/D North displacement where the secondary Denver mintmark impression is visible north of the primary position, this 1942-D Lincoln Wheat Cent repunched mintmark carries extensive cross-references: CONECA RPM #11, Coppercoins 1942D-1MM-011, and Wexler Variety ID 1942-D 1c WRPM-006. Three independent attribution systems cataloging the same variety provides strong confirmation of its legitimacy and collectibility. The obverse die markers include a short, nearly vertical die scratch to the right of the upper Y in LIBERTY and a die scratch running ESE from the rim above the E in WE. On the reverse, a die gouge appears on the center right side of the O in OF, and another die gouge touches the bottom right of the E in STATES. The 1942-D cent was produced at the Denver Mint in the year that the United States entered full wartime mobilization following Pearl Harbor. Denver struck approximately 206.7 million cents in 1942, still using the standard bronze composition before the switch to steel in 1943. The D/D North displacement records a moment in die preparation when a mint worker punched the Denver mintmark into the working die, found it positioned too low, and re-punched it higher — leaving both impressions permanently engraved in the die steel and subsequently transferred to every cent struck from that die throughout its service life.
