1942 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004 / RPM-004

Description

Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-504, RPM-004, which Wexler numbers WRPM-004, is a 1942-D Lincoln wheat cent with a D/D Northwest repunched mintmark, and both catalogs record a change of reverse die partway through its stages. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number FS-01-1942D-504 (018.92). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties lists four stages. Obverse stage A has a north-south scratch from the end of the upper loop of the 9 down to its tail. Stage B has a scratch heading NNE from the top of the 9 and a SW-NE scratch left of the 1. Stage C has a short scratch running west under the crossbar from the left side of the upright of the 4, and a few small scratches inside the top of the 9's loop; stage D is the same as C. Reverse stages A to C use the first reverse, with nothing of note. Stage D is the second reverse, with a scratch from the lower right of the O in ONE running south into the E of CENT, a scratch heading north off the U in UNITED at the top of its right arm, and a long thin north-south scratch from the D of UNITED, on its right side, to below the M of AMERICA. Lloyd Hanson submitted stage A, John Bordner stages B and C, and Ben Peters stage D. CONECA lists it as RPM #4 and Coppercoins as 1942D-1MM-004, and Wexler notes that Brian Ribar took the photos for the Wexler RPM Files. VarietyVista, with no reporter named, describes D/D Northwest. Under UVC-112 and DMR-005, an early stage A is unconfirmed and stage B has a medium secondary mintmark in a middle die state with a late reverse. Under UVC-113 and DMR-006, stage C has a weak secondary mintmark in a late state and a changed reverse die in an early state, and stage D a very weak secondary mintmark, very late, with the reverse in a middle state.
