Description

Cataloged as DDO-003 (UVC-1502, DMR-012), this 1941-D Lincoln wheat cent displays strong extra thickness on all obverse lettering and the date. Three die stages document the variety across two reverse die pairings. Stage A is in early die state with markers unconfirmed. Stage B at late die state develops a strong die scratch running north to south in front of Lincoln's profile and a die crack from the lower right wheat ear to the rim on the reverse, which has reached mid-die state. A second reverse die (UVC-2514, DMR-017) appears in Stage C, where a light die crack runs northwest on the shoulder at late die state while the replacement reverse is in early die state. The reverse die change between Stages B and C means collectors can pursue two distinct die marriages from the same DDO obverse. The strong extra thickness across all lettering and date makes DDO-003 one of the more visually accessible doubled dies in the 1941-D wheat cent series, requiring only moderate magnification to confirm the spread on the broader letter strokes.
