1940 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1940 25¢ WDDO-006 and submitted by Gary Wagnon with photos taken by Billy G. Crawford for the Wexler Files, this Washington Silver Quarter displays a spread to the east on IGWT (IN GOD WE TRUST) — the abbreviation indicating that the doubling affects the motto inscription with the secondary image displaced eastward (to the right) of the primary. Obverse die markers include a die gouge just to the right of the upper R in LIBERTY and several die scratches running west-southwest to east-northeast to the left of the T in LIBERTY, while the later die state adds a die gouge just to the left of the eagle's neck on the reverse — a progressive marker that developed during continued production after the initial documentation. The east-directed spread on IN GOD WE TRUST creates thickened or slightly separated letter profiles that are most visible on the vertical strokes of the letters, where the rightward displacement produces the widest measurable separation between primary and secondary images. The 1940 Washington Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3 mm. John Flanagan designed the obverse portrait of George Washington based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's celebrated bust, and the heraldic eagle reverse served from the series' inception in 1932 through 1998.
