1940 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1940 WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A clockwise (CW) spread pivoting from about 2:00 shows on the lower queue and the ribbon, the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. Obverse Stage A has a NNW/SSE scratch inside the ear and a scratch between the L and I of LIBERTY that follows the rim. Obverse Stage B shows a short scratch heading ESE from the lower part of the L in LIBERTY and many SW/NE scratches across the cheek's lower back. The first reverse (Stage A) is a strong doubled die in its own right, listed in the Wexler files as 1940 WDDR-001: Class VI extra thickness, extremely strong, appears on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, the leaves, the branches and the outer parts of both wings. On it, well east of the U in UNITED, a strong gouge (dot) sits on the eagle's right wing. Reverse Stage B is a new reverse die that lacks the doubled die reverse. Joe Ridzy submitted Stage A and Gary Wagnon submitted Stage B. CONECA lists it as 3-O-V. The photos were taken for the Wexler Files by Billy G. Crawford.
