1940 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

The 1940 Washington Quarter WDDO-005, attributed by the Wexler Team (designation 1940 25¢ WDDO-005), shows a spread to the east on IN GOD WE TRUST and slight eastward spread on the bottom of the ribbon below the motto. The reverse die marker is a die gouge just left of the eagle's neck. Obverse die scratches developed in a later state include strong NW scratches from the tops of the I and N of IN, a heavy WNW/ESE scratch from the bottom of the 1 in the date, and a heavy scratch extending westward from the bottom of the 9 in the date. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design, struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia, has long attracted variety enthusiasts, and the pre-war issues of the late 1930s offer a relatively underpopulated field of doubled die obverse discoveries. The eastward motto spread on WDDO-005, while modest, is detectable under magnification and supported by the die scratch markers for confident attribution.
