1940 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Submitted by Joe Feld and attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1940 25-cent WDDO-001, this Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter displays westward spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. Reference photographs were taken by Billy G. Crawford for the Wexler Files. The obverse progresses through two die stages: Stage A shows a strong die scratch east from the lower right 9 in the date, a short scratch east from the lower right 0, a scratch west-northwest from the upper left B in LIBERTY, a gouge inside the upper B, and a scratch southwest from the lower left R; Stage B shows a die crack developing across the base of the bust into the lower ribbon. No reverse die markers are noted. No cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known. The 1940-P Washington Quarter was struck during the Depression Era at Philadelphia, and doubled die obverses from pre-war Washington Quarters are relatively scarce in the reference literature. The westward spread on IN GOD WE TRUST provides the primary diagnostic, while the Stage A to Stage B progression allows collectors to distinguish die states. A die gouge can be found inside the upper B in LIBERTY.
