1940 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011

Description

Medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date identifies this 1940 Philadelphia Mint Washington Silver Quarter doubled die obverse, cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-011 with die markers UVC-0125 and DMR-013. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B where both obverse and reverse are in Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The "medium spread" classification indicates doubling that is clearly visible under low magnification but does not achieve the dramatic separation seen on the strongest doubled die varieties. Eleven documented doubled die obverses for the 1940-P Washington Quarter reflects substantial variety research on pre-war silver coinage. John Flanagan's Washington portrait, introduced in 1932 on the bicentennial of George Washington's birth, provides numerous reference points for detecting hub doubling, including the IN GOD WE TRUST motto positioned in a tight arc above the head and the four-digit date below the bust. The UVC-0125 and DMR-013 codes provide precise identification within the VarietyVista cross-referencing system for researchers comparing multiple doubled die obverses on the 1940-P date.
