Description

Twelfth documented doubled die obverse for the 1940 Denver Mint Washington Quarter, DDO-012 exhibits medium spread on OD of GOD, WE, and UST of TRUST — stronger doubling than the light spread on the preceding DDO-011 from the same date. Cataloged by VarietyVista under die marker codes UVC-0140 and DMR-013, this variety reached its most advanced state in Stage C, where a die crack with chips developed across Washington's bust in late die state, with the reverse also showing late die state wear. The medium spread designation means doubling is visible under moderate magnification, making attribution more straightforward than varieties classified as light. The affected elements — GOD, WE, and TRUST — concentrate in the motto inscription, suggesting the hub shift primarily affected this area. Two consecutive doubled die obverses for 1940-D, DDO-011 and DDO-012, with different spread intensities demonstrate that multiple dies received slightly different hub impressions during Denver's production run. The 1940-D was struck in 90% silver, a composition used through 1964.
