1940-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010
Error
Description
Hub doubling on this 1940 Denver Washington quarter manifests as light extra thickness on OD of GOD WE, UST of TRUST, and BER of LIBERTY, cataloged as DDO-010 (UVC-0138, DMR-011). Three die stages document the die's working life. Stage A represents early die state and remains unconfirmed for supplementary markers. By Stage B, a light die crack has developed on the lower bust between the 9 and 4 of the date, with both sides at mid-die-state. Stage C shows significant deterioration: a die crack runs across the bust on the obverse, additional cracks appear on the forehead and through the hair, and on the reverse a die crack extends down the eagle's right wing, placing both sides in late die state. The progression from clean early impressions through cracking and eventual breakdown gives die-stage collectors a clear chronological framework. Washington quarter doubled dies from the pre-war era are collected alongside the silver composition series. The spread on the motto and LIBERTY elements requires magnification, but once the letter thickening is identified, die-stage cracks provide confirmation of which production phase the coin represents.
