1940 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005

Description

Medium spread visible on GOD WE and the RUST portion of TRUST distinguishes this 1940 Denver Mint Washington Silver Quarter doubled die obverse, the fifth documented for the date and cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0133 and DMR-006. Die Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in Early Die State, Stage B is Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C is Late Die State (unconfirmed). The Early Die State documentation for Stage A — where both dies are fresh — provides the baseline condition from which later states can be compared. The selective doubling on GOD WE and RUST rather than the complete motto suggests a subtle misalignment during hubbing that affected some portions of the inscription more than others, consistent with a slight rotational or pivotal shift. Five doubled die obverses documented for this lower-mintage date is a respectable count, indicating that variety researchers have given the 1940-D thorough attention. Denver Mint Washington Quarters from the pre-war era are collected actively in their own right, and the addition of documented hub doubling enhances the numismatic interest of specimens attributable to specific die pairs.
