1940-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-007

Description

Attributed as 1940-D 1¢ WRPM-007 by the Wexler Team, this Denver Lincoln Wheat cent displays a strong secondary mintmark positioned lower than WRPM-004, providing a key diagnostic for separating the two. A circular die scratch connects from the first T in TRUST at its very top, running west through WE and continuing above GOD. Another die scratch extends north-northwest from about the top center of the mintmark to the center of the date. In Stage A, the secondary D is strong and the scratches are well defined. By Stage B, only weak remnants of the motto scratches remain and the secondary mintmark has faded considerably. The reverse in Stage A shows a light die scratch from the lower left center of the N in UNUM to the rim, but by Stage B these markers have been abraded away. Repunched mintmarks on 1940s Wheat cents arose from hand-punching each working die, and slight positional shifts between blows left overlapping impressions. The dramatic circular scratch connecting TRUST through WE to GOD is an unusually distinctive marker for quick die identification even before examining the mintmark itself.
