Description

1940-D WDDO-004 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Doubling appears on the 4 and 0 of the date and on IN GOD WE TRUST. Obverse: a faded gouge in the field left of the mint mark; a small gouge beneath the bowtie's right edge; an arcing crack through the bust's truncation above the VDB initials; and a series of mostly horizontal scratches inside and around the top of the ear. Reverse: a mostly horizontal crack through the upper crossbar of ONE's E, and a tiny gouge (dot) above the E and S of STATES. J.C. Moreland submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 2-O-II-C.
