Description

1940-D WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The 4 and 0 of the date and IN GOD WE TRUST are doubled. Obverse: a diagonal scratch running SSE off the E of WE from its upper right edge; long undulating gouges on the chin and on the neck below the beard; a concentric scratch near the rim beneath the bust's truncation; a light diagonal scratch over the RT of LIBERTY; and a gouge well north of LIBERTY's E. Reverse: vertical scratches around the left wheat tip; a diagonal scratch through the lower opening of UNUM's U; a scratch running mostly north from CENT's T at its upper right edge; vertical scratches through OF and the UNIT of UNITED; a dot left of the bottom of AMERICA's first A; and a diagonal scratch beneath AMERICA's last A.
