1940 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004

Description

1940-D WRPM-004 is a repunched mint mark on the 1940-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as D/D Southeast, with the secondary D southeast of the primary. On the Stage A obverse the primary mint mark sits higher than on WRPM-007, and the secondary mint mark is strong. Light scratches run south through the date and mint mark. A strong scratch leaves TRUST's R at its upper left heading west, passes over the first T, then thins and follows the rim to end above the O of GOD. Another scratch runs ESE from the O of GOD, starting right of its lower center, to the D. Light east-west scratches cross the whole motto. On Stage B the motto scratches are abraded away, the date scratches are weak, appearing mostly at the 19, the scratch from TRUST's R shows mostly at the R, and the secondary mint mark is weaker, best seen with low magnification. The Stage A reverse has very light, fine NNW/SSE scratches in the field; on Stage B they are abraded away. Lloyd Hanson submitted the variety.
