1940-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1940-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-005 provides an exceptionally well-documented mintmark visibility progression. Die markers UVC-082 / DMR-006: Stage A with strong secondary mintmark at EDS and reverse at EMDS; Stage B with medium secondary mintmark at MDS and reverse at LMDS; Stage C with weak secondary mintmark at LDS and reverse at LDS. The systematic strong-to-medium-to-weak progression documents how die wear flattens the displaced impression, while the reverse simultaneously tracks from EMDS through LMDS to LDS. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, struck at the Denver Mint during the pre-war era. This variety is valuable for study because its clean three-stage attenuation makes it an ideal teaching example of RPM wear mechanics.
