1940-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent carries a repunched D mintmark where the punch was applied twice at slightly different positions. Die markers UVC-079 / DMR-003 track three stages: Stage A shows a strong secondary mintmark at EDS with the reverse at EDS; Stage B has a medium secondary mintmark at MDS with reverse at MDS; Stage C exhibits a weak secondary mintmark at LDS with reverse at LDS. The systematic attenuation from strong to medium to weak documents how die wear progressively flattened the displaced D impression. Struck in 1940 at 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc, 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, each Denver die received its mintmark via manual punch application at the Philadelphia Mint before shipment.
