1939-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

A very close clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 12:00 on this 1939-S Washington quarter shows on the date, the designer's initials, slightly on IN GOD WE TRUST, and the bottom of the ribbon. This is a replacement listing: the original WDDO-006 was delisted because it shared a die pair with an earlier catalogued variety. The current WDDO-006 was formerly listed as WDDO-052 before being renumbered. Photos of this variety were taken by Billy G. Crawford for the Wexler Files. No obverse or reverse die markers are noted. No additional cross-references are currently known. The 1939-S Washington quarter was struck at San Francisco in 90% silver, a composition maintained throughout the Washington quarter series until mid-1965. The quarter portrait, engraved by John Flanagan from a model by Laura Gardin Fraser, had been in production only since 1932. Wexler-catalogued doubled die obverses on pre-war Washington quarters carry significant collector interest, particularly on San Francisco issues where mintages were lower than Philadelphia production. Die Markers: Obverse: A die scratch runs NW from the upper left U in TRUST. A die scratch runs SSE from the R in TRUST. A die gouge can be found to the upper right of the E in LIBERTY. Die scratches run NW/SE between the lower E and R in LIBERTY, Die scratches run NW/SE between the R and T in LIBERTY. Die scratches run ESE from the right side of the Y in LIBERTY.
