1939 (S) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1939-S WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1939-S Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A clockwise (CW) spread pivoting from about 12:00 shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials, the lower queue and the lower ribbon. On the obverse, a scratch heads east off the first 9 of the date, from its right side; a scratch joins the G in GOD, at its lower right, to the U in TRUST at its upper left; and a scratch heads west off the I in LIBERTY, from its left side. The reverse also carries a repunched mint mark, an S/S North (the extra S lies north) which the Wexler RPM files carry as 1939-S WRPM-001. Its markers: a crack running from the rim across the upper NITED of UNITED, a crack down the eagle's right wing that ends in the field over the Q in QUARTER, and a very rough surface in the lower MER of AMERICA. Bob Ryan submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 3-O-V. The photos were taken for the Wexler Files by Billy G. Crawford. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
