1938 (D) Buffalo Nickel - Over Mint Mark WOMM-003 / OMM-003

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-513, this 1938-D Buffalo nickel is VarietyVista's OMM-003 and Wexler's WOMM-003, a D/S South over mint mark. Wexler writes the cross-reference FS-05-1938D-513. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes the D/S with the diagonal curve of the S inside the D and the bottom of the S just below it. The obverse has nothing significant. The reverse is also a doubled die, listed in Wexler's files as WDDR-001, with a close Class II spread on the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM and light Class VI extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS. Lloyd Hanson submitted the coin, and CONECA lists it as OMM #3. VarietyVista, with the reporter unknown, describes the mint mark as D/S South and notes the reverse is listed as DDR-001. Under its marker codes UVC-226 and DMR-011, an early stage A is unconfirmed; at stage B both sides are in a middle die state; at stage C reverse and obverse are in a late die state.
