1938 (D) Buffalo Nickel - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 / DDR-001

Description

DDR-001, which Wexler numbers WDDR-001, is a doubled die reverse on the 1938-D Buffalo nickel with a light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, cross-referenced as FS-513 (Wexler writes it FS-05-1938D-513). Both catalogs note that the same reverse is also an over mint mark, listed by Wexler as WOMM-003 and by VarietyVista as OMM-003. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a close Class II spread on the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM, plus light Class VI extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS. It notes nothing significant on the obverse. On the reverse the mint mark is a D over an S: the S's diagonal curve sits inside the D and the bottom of the S shows just beneath it. Lloyd Hanson submitted the coin, and John A. Wexler took the photos. CONECA lists it both as 1-R-II and as OMM #3. VarietyVista, crediting John A. Wexler with the report, describes a light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and notes the reverse is listed as OMM-003. Under its marker codes UVC-226 and DMR-011, an early stage A is unconfirmed; at stage B both sides are in a middle die state; at stage C reverse and obverse are in a late die state.
