Description

Obverse Stage A: Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: Die gouge at the rim at 4:00. Die gouge between the rim and the bust located between the jacket folds. Weak lathe mark between the rim and the designer’s initials. Series of die scratches NE from the vest, bowtie and throat. Series of E/W die scratches inside and around the ear area. Obverse Stage B: Die was damaged, causing a long NW gouge from the rim at 4:00 just below the stage A gouge. Additional NW gouges extend from the rim at 3:30 and 3:45. Gouge on the lower left of the 7 in the date. Gouges on the inside of the 3 in the date to the right. Several gouges between the bust and rim at the vest area. Stage A markers are slightly weaker. Lathe mark abraded away. Obverse Stage C: Details of the lower vest are and all folds very weak due to heavy polishing to remove the die damage. Very weak remnants of the long stage B gouge at 4:00. Gouges at the 3 and 7 still present. Weaker stage A scratches. New gouge on the bust left of the last jacket fold. Obverse Stage D: The secondary curve is abraded away at the mint mark. Stage C gouge at the bust is weaker. Gouges at the numerals are weak. Most scratches are abraded away. Very weak remnants of the long stage B gouge at 4:00 still present. Reverse Stage A: Die scratch NE from the upper right side of the R in PLURIBUS. Die scratch NE from the left upper side of the E in STATES. Short N/S die gouge between the M of UNUM and the right wheat ear. Reverse Stage B: Stage A scratches still present. Gouge is weaker. Reverse Stage C: Weaker stage A markers. Reverse Stage D: Previous markers abraded away except for a weak scratch at the E in STATES. Two die scratches north from the left upright of the last U in PLURIBUS.
